Design of KTM 85 SX 17/14

The KTM 85 SX 17/14 is a racing dirt bike for teenagers who already know how to ride and race and are ready to move on to the big leagues and championships with their skills and passion.

The bright orange and white color scheme has been refreshed with a hint of purple and black to contrast and add a bit of pop.

The decals and graphics discreetly yet proudly shout out ‘KTM’ on either side.

The first feature to catch your eye is the bright orange flat seat, almost beckoning you to sit on and feel it, and its plush cushion, which offers the ultimate comfort, grip, and durability without hindering your ability to twist and turn. It has an adjustable seat and a seat height of 850mm.

The handlebar is made from tapered aluminum, which is lightweight and firm to hold onto. Its shape and bend allow for easy control and give you excellent ergonomics.

Furthermore, the ODI lock-on grips come with an excellent grasp on the right side and a lock-on grip on the left-hand side – these do not need glue or wire for mounting.

The bike’s frame is built from hydroformed chromium-molybdenum steel tubes, which have been welded mechanically by robots for pin-point accuracy and flex characteristics.

Moreover, the subframe made from lightweight aluminum gives the rear fender additional support, strength, and balance, providing the rider an overall better handling of the bike.

The ‘big-wheel’ features an Excel rims combo powder coated in black and fitted with a 17-inch front wheel and a 14-inch rear wheel. These are accordingly mounted on CNC-machine hubs and encased in MAXXIS MX-ST tires for extraordinary grip and stability.

Engine of KTM 85 SX 17/14

The 2023 KTM 85 SX 17/14 is fitted with the world-class race-winning 85cc, 2-stroke, 6-speed, single-cylinder engine with excellent power and torque.

This power-packed mechanism delivers immense strength and rideability throughout the rev range.

The power valve fine-tunes and tailors the power delivery to suit the track conditions and the rider’s ability to handle the bike.

Features of KTM 85 SX 17/14

The tiny air box cleverly optimizes the small space and does it to provide filter protection. The Twin Air Filter and the cage has a simple mounting design and system, and it makes maintenance of the filter easy and quick, not wasting time while you’re on track.

The one-piece swingarm is made through a die-cast gravity production, giving it superb strength while still being as light as a feather. The swingarm allows for a wide range of adjustments for the rear wheel.

It lets you decide if you need a short wheelbase for tight, winding tracks or a longer wheelbase for more rough, bumpy tracks. In addition to this, the swingarms chain has visible markings that can be seen from above to make any adjustment more accessible and more accurate.

The ‘no-dirt’ footpegs allow the rider to clean their shoes without causing lumps of mud and soil to stick onto the soles of their footwear and on the bike.

The radiators on either side help keep the engine at an optimal temperature to ensure consistent horsepower throughout the ride. The radiators have been positioned to lower the center of gravity while still being slim and blending in with the bike’s overall design.

The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and the coolant circuit routing system ensure an optimum engine temperature for the highest performance output regardless of the track conditions. Secondly, the radiators have special protectors that shelter them from flying rocks and debris. In the event of an impact, it will disperse the energy around the radiators.

The exhaust pipe is designed to suit the characteristics of the dirt bike and is made through a 3-dimensional stamping process. After it is shaped, it is expertly welded by a robot for the highest quality and consistency.

The silencer is lightweight and compact, and the packing wool has been improved and is about 40g lighter, ensuring minimal noise.

Transmission, Suspension, And Brakes of KTM 85 SX 17/14

The 2023 KTM 85 SX 17/14 comes with a 6-speed gearbox. The gear ratios have been skillfully developed to match the engine and allow smooth and precise shifting while racing. The gearbox also has a driveshaft with a screw on the front sprocket to hold it in place.

The front suspensions are an XACT 43 WP Upside-Down fork which is 43 mm WP XACT with AER technology, and a split fork design with a capsuled air spring on the left side and an oil damping system on the right. You can also easily adjust the preload using the single air pressure valve and a supplied air pump. The front suspension gives the suspension travel of 278mm.

The rear suspension is an XACT WP with advanced PDS (Progressive Dampening System), which allows for a high progression rate and responds well to uneven, rough terrain. The preload, compression, and rebound are fully adjustable, and the rear wheel gives you 305mm of suspension travel.

The fitted brakes are the Formula brakes system that incorporates lightweight wave disc brakes with radial calipers – four pistons in front and 2 pistons in the rear. This system controls the rider and ensures braking in any situation and condition. The front and rear brakes’ diameters are 240 and 220 mm, respectively.
